Membership, insurance and banking basics
According to the credit union, residents of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida and Tennessee are eligible, as are family members of current or potential members. Depending on your circumstances you may be asked to join an approved association, which the credit union says is free. See Who can join and how.
Membership requires a $5 deposit into a share savings account. It's your ownership share in the cooperative, not a fee.
Listerhill states that it is federally insured by the NCUA. Standard share insurance coverage is $250,000 per share owner, per insured credit union, for each account ownership category. Details are on ncua.gov.
They offer similar services, but a credit union is a not-for-profit cooperative owned by its members, who elect the board with one vote each. Banks are usually owned by shareholders. Chapter 1 explains the differences.
Listerhill describes its membership as lifelong: once you're a member, you remain one even if you move, retire or change employers.
